  • Addressing the Flooding Crisis in Zimbabwe’s Central Business Districts – VISET Statement

The Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) wish to express profound concern regarding the recent flooding incidents that have severely impacted the Central Business Districts (CBDs) of major towns in Zimbabwe, particularly in Harare. These floods have caused significant disruptions to business operations and have posed serious risks to the livelihoods of countless individuals working in the informal economy.

The ongoing floods are a clear reflection of the inadequate attention given by city authorities to the critical issue of drainage system maintenance and infrastructure development. For far too long, the failure to invest in effective drainage solutions has resulted in the current state of disarray, leading to the flooding that not only disrupts economic activities but also places undue hardship on our communities.

VISET is committed to social and economic transformation and recognizes that the informal economy is a vital component of our nation’s livelihood. In light of the current crisis, we stand ready to collaborate with local authorities and stakeholders to formulate and implement effective strategies to address the underlying drainage issues. It is imperative that we work together to ensure the safety and functionality of our city’s infrastructure, creating a conducive environment for all workers.

We also urge our informal economy workers to take proactive measures in their operations by working from clean domains and being mindful of the impact of their activities on the drainage systems. It is crucial that we do not contribute to blockages that exacerbate these flooding issues. By maintaining cleanliness and collaborating on best practices, we can foster a healthier urban environment and protect our businesses.

In conclusion, VISET calls upon all stakeholders, including government officials, city planners, and community members, to embrace a collaborative approach to address these pressing challenges. Together, we can develop sustainable solutions that enhance the livelihoods of our citizens and preserve the economic vitality of our cities
