VISET Statement on Workers’ Day 2025
As the world to commemorate Workers’ Day, we at the Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) reiterate the critical importance of supporting and uplifting informal economy workers in Zimbabwe. In our country, the informal economy is not merely an ancillary workforce; it is a vital engine that sustains the livelihoods of the majority of our population. Unfortunately, these workers continue to face systemic challenges, including lack of access to social protection, limited resources, and vulnerability to exploitation. The International Labour Organization’s Recommendation 204 emphasizes the need for a comprehensive strategy to facilitate the transition from informality to formality, recognizing that this transition is paramount for fostering decent work and improving working conditions for millions.
At VISET, we stand ready to collaborate with the Zimbabwean government and other stakeholders to expedite the finalization of the Formalisation Strategy for Zimbabwe. By working together, we can create a pathway that not only recognizes the invaluable contributions of informal workers but also empowers them with the rights and protections they deserve. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all VISET members committed to hard work and resilience in the informal economy. Your dedication exemplifies the spirit of entrepreneurship and innovation that propels our nation forward.
Together, let us strive for a future where every worker, regardless of their employment status, can thrive in a secure and dignified environment. Happy Workers’ Day!
