On this World Decent Work Day, the Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) stands in solidarity with all workers, particularly those in the informal economy, whose contributions to our national economy often go unrecognized and unprotected. As we commemorate this important day, we call on the Government of Zimbabwe to prioritize the promotion of decent work conditions for all informal economy workers.
Informal economy workers face numerous challenges that undermine their dignity and livelihoods, including a lack of formalization, limited access to markets, and inadequate social protection. The precarious nature of their work poses significant barriers to achieving sustainable livelihoods and worsens their vulnerability to economic shocks.
Recently, we have seen devastating fires in areas like Mbare and Glenview Area 8, which have destroyed the wares of many traders, stripping them of their means of survival. These incidents highlight the urgent need for robust support systems and safety measures to protect the businesses and lives of informal workers. It is essential that the government invests in fire prevention and support mechanisms to ensure that traders in these vulnerable communities can sustain their livelihoods without the fear of losing everything to unforeseen disasters.
We also advocate for the formalization of the informal economy, as per the International Labour Organization (ILO) Recommendation 204, which urges nations to adopt policies that facilitate the transition from informality to formality. Such efforts not only empower workers but also enhance their access to vital services, social protection, and opportunities for growth. Creating pathways for informal workers to join the formal economy is a crucial step toward fostering inclusive economic development and ensuring that every worker can secure their rights and create a better future for themselves and their families.
On this World Decent Work Day, we call upon the Government of Zimbabwe to take decisive action to ensure that all workers, particularly those in the informal economy, are afforded decent work. This includes implementing policies that enhance formalization, improve access to markets, and establish comprehensive social protection systems. Together, we can build a more equitable and just society for all workers.
For a better Zimbabwe, let us stand together for decent work for all!
