On February 16, 2024, Vendors Initiative for Social and Economic Transformation (VISET) held a meeting with representatives from the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission (ZHRC).
The purpose of the meeting was to identify stakeholders who would be part in the Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights (ESCR) working group. The ZHRC is one of six commissions established by the Constitution of Zimbabwe through section 242, and it is responsible for protecting the rights of Zimbabweans. The Commission also has an additional mandate as the Public Protector’s Office.
The ZHRC representatives stated that they have selected VISET to be a member of the ESCR working group, in recognition of VISET’s advocacy initiatives in the informal economy. VISET Executive Director Mr. Samuel Wadzai was nominated to represent the organization in the ESCR working group. The working group will consist of 17 expert members, who will serve two-year terms and operate under the Terms of Reference provided by the ZHRC. The working group will meet quarterly, beginning March 2024.
The ESCR working group will also collaborate with the ZHRC and provide advice to the Government of Zimbabwe on human rights issues. The group will also conduct research, monitor ESCR issues, and provide education and advocacy services.
The ZHRC’s recognition of VISET’s work is a testament to the organization’s dedication to promoting and protecting the rights of informal economy workers. VISET welcomes the invitation and is fully committed to working with the ZHRC and the Government of Zimbabwe. We believe that our partnership with ZHRC will further strengthen our ability to spotlight the challenges and abuses in the informal economy ecosystem and enable action to be taken on perpetrators of injustices.
